GROUNDSWORKER

Groundsworker
Grounds Department

Salary Range: $3,155 - $4,950/Monthly

Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday – Friday 6.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.; non-exempt classification. Temporary one-year appointment from date of hire.

 

Essential Functions: Under the direction of the General Manager, the incumbent performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus. The incumbent will: plant, cultivate, fertilize, water and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers; rakes leaves; hoe weeds; clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots; prepare and treat soils for planting; maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair; trim trees, hedges, and shrubs and erect tree supports; operate and perform minor maintenance on small power operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment; assist in the preparation and lining of athletic fields for events; occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions; drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties; and supervise the work of unskilled assistants.

Required Qualifications & Experience: One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscape areas or in general grounds maintenance methods. Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods; general knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, flowers, and of the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment. Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California. The incumbent must have the ability to: perform strenuous physical work as described in this class; sow mechanical aptitude and motor coordination; learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and to follow simple oral and written instructions. Must possess a valid California Driver's License. Demonstrated ability and/or interest in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
