Assistant Professor of Asian American Studies

Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate in Asian/Asian American Studies, Pacific Islander Studies, Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Education or a relevant discipline in the Social Sciences or Humanities or closely-related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/17/2023).

2) Teaching and mentorship experience at the undergraduate level of a diverse student population.

3) Scholarly expertise in Asian American Studies or Pacific Islander Studies.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Evidence of research and teaching within Asian/Asian American Studies or Pacific Islander Communities. Areas of research or teaching may include, but are not limited to: education, BIPOC pedagogies, urban ethnography, and indigenous communities;

2) Evidence of community-engaged research, teaching, and practice with/in Asian and Asian American and Hispanic/Latinx communities;

3) Demonstrated evidence of collaborative and teamwork experience;

4) Evidence of expertise in teaching for social justice and educational equity, emphasizing intersectionality of multiple positionalities that includes, but is not limited to, race, class, gender, sexuality and ability.


The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community.  These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.


The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses with a focus on education in Asian American and Hispanic Serving Institutions, mentor students, engage with Asian and Asian American, Pacific Islander community partners, actively participate in program and curriculum development, and maintain an active research profile.

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience (anticipated hiring range: $82,812 - $85,704)

The College:

As the second college of ethnic studies in the nation, the Cal State LA College of Ethnic Studies provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that centers the histories, traditions, cultures, experiences, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color, making connections between the local and the transnational. It currently houses three academic departments, including Pan-African Studies Department, Asian and Asian American Studies Department, and Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies Department.

The Department:

Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) is a small but vibrant academic unit. AAAS started as a BA degree program in the fall of 2004, and in May of 2019, AAAS was granted full departmental status. Last year, AAAS successfully conducted a national search and recruited two tenure-track assistant professors, our first group of new faculty members in the program’s 17-year history. Our departmental identity is rooted in community engagement, social justice education, and scholarly excellence.
