Biological Sciences

Salary Range: $4,283 - $7,430/Monthly

 

Work ScheduleFull-Time, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Temporary one-year appointment from date of hire. May be extended, may become permanent; non-exempt classification.

 

Essential FunctionsUnder general supervision of the Chair of the Biological Sciences Department, the full time Instructional Support Technician III (IST) will perform comprehensive support services for departmental curriculum with an emphasis towards the microbiology lab courses. The IST will make extensive use of materials and supplies including live (BSL 1 and BSL 2) and fixed specimens or unique and scientific equipment in teaching laboratories or instructional centers appropriate for achieving curricular goals. The IST will be responsible for preparing scientific laboratory materials and maintaining specialized equipment necessary for teaching needs and exercise the knowledge and judgment related to properly managing and maintaining various scientific materials. Some materials are living and/or fragile requiring special handling, storage, safety precautions, or disposal procedures especially for biohazardous and chemical waste. These complexities will require substantial planning to project needs and require development of systems to deliver support appropriately. The IST will serve as a liaison to other areas of the University in order to coordinate any necessary resolution of instruction-related issues.

Required Qualifications & Experience:A Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or related discipline from an accredited college of university and at least two years of relevant experience in the ordering, purchasing, accounting and supporting of technical materials, supplies and/or equipment. Experience in working with specialized instrumentation for molecular and/or cellular biology. The incumbent must have knowledge of procedures and practices relating to providing support services; with particular emphasis on microbiology; knowledge of procedures and practices related to ordering and inventory; and knowledge of the materials, supplies and equipment. The incumbent must have the ability to: operate relevant scientific equipment and computer interfaces; plan, organize and schedule activities; maintain records; adjust and perform simple maintenance on technical and scientific equipment; communicate in a professional manner and read and write at a level suitable for records maintenance and project needs. The incumbent must have a demonstrated interest and/or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the California State University.
