Department Summary

At the SJSU Lurie College of Education Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences, we prepare innovative scholars via transformative education and high-impact, equity-minded research. Our mission is to prepare creative, evidence-informed, critical thinkers and change agents for a profession in speech-language pathology and related fields. This work prioritizes clinical education and research that reflect, elevate, and advocate for the interests and needs of our diverse communities. We do this with a culturally responsive and student-centered focus.

We value hands-on clinical education for student clinicians, interprofessional training, evidence-based practice, clinical innovation, community engagement, and culturally responsive practice. The Department enrolls about 250 students in its B.S. and M.S. programs and houses the on-campus Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders (KACCD) and multiple labs. Faculty focus areas include child language disorders, autism, intellectual disability, neurological disorders, augmentative and alternative communication, voice disorder, fluency disorders, motor speech disorders and dysphagia. Our department is accepting applications for a full-time lecturer (12-month appointment) to serve as the Director of Clinical Education to start in August 2024.    

Brief Description of Duties

  • The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advising. 
  • Carry the equivalent of 15 WTU each semester (i.e., a full-time position)
  • Visioning and managing the Kay Armstead Center for Communication Disorders to meet education, research and community needs
  • Coordinating undergraduate and graduate clinical education program (e.g., implementing, monitoring and improving the quality of clinical education, providing clinical educator training) following department mission and accreditation standards
  • Teaching two fieldwork/clinical courses a year and providing clinical educators with supervision support when needed
  • Coordinating fieldwork (school) placements and identifying/mentoring fieldwork clinical educators to meet program needs
  • Providing coordination support for the graduate program (e.g., attend annual meetings/supervision training as appropriate, provide clinical educator onboarding/training, provide students with clinical advising, verify student clinical records, contribute to accreditation/assessment reports and orientations) and/or other service obligations as needed within the department (e.g., ASHA continuing education administration)
  • Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree (M.A. or M.S.) in Speech-Language Pathology 
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology
  • California licensure in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Minimum 3 years post-Masters experience as a speech-language pathologist (SLP)
  • Knowledge of communication disorders across the lifespan and clinical management across settings, with ability to objectively evaluate clinical performance of student clinicians. 
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience. 
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Speech-Language Pathology or related field.
  • Significant leadership in clinical education and supervision of undergraduate and graduate student clinicians
  • Experience working with a strong pedagogical understanding of instructional strategies to support diverse learners
  • Experience working with staff, faculty, students and clients/families with culturally-linguistically diverse backgrounds and creating an inclusive, equitable and welcoming environment
  • Experience in managing and developing speech and hearing clinics, caseload management, budget and fundraising
  • Training in best practices for clinical education, supervision and telepractice in speech-language pathology

Anticipated starting salary:

L-A / Range 2 - $5714 - $6500
L-B / Range 3 - $6788 - $8184
L-C / Range 4 - $7457 - $10,332
L-D / Range 5 - $9412 - $11,343

Employment Conditions

Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role (e.g., preventing discrimination and harassment, gender equity and Title IX, health and safety). Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, the faculty member in this position will subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Individuals designated as Campus Security Authorities are required to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution and to complete Clery Act training as determined by the University Clery Director. Conditional Offer

The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California and requires commuting to the campus. Employment is contingent upon US residence and proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers of employment are conditional, and may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.
