Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the Director, the Program Assistant will assist with the coordination and implementation of the Mentorship Program. The incumbent will be tasked with student mentor recruitment, selection, training, and development; and serve as an additional liaison between the department and other divisional campus partners throughout the summer and during the New Student Orientation (NSO) season. 

  • Assist with the development, execution, and evaluation of training programs, workshops, and retreats which ensure student staff are well-prepared to mentor and be a resource for incoming students.
  • Assist with researching various student leadership groups on campus for involvement as peer mentors for the program, primarily selecting from the Orientation Leadership Team.
  • Collaborates with the Orientation Advisory Committee (OAC), from a broad campus network of offices and departments, to plan involvement in peer mentor training, resources offered to first-time students, important campus-wide dates and deadlines, and engagement opportunities available on campus.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
  • Equivalent to one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Experience in advising/mentoring students individually and in groups, student program management, and resolution of complex student services issues preferred.
  • Experience in generating and monitoring progress achieved with Student Learning Outcomes preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organization and program management; working knowledge of research and interviewing techniques; working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge of the organization, procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned; and working knowledge of the basic principles, practices and major trends in the Student Services field to which assigned.
  • Ability and specialized skills to: rapidly acquire a working knowledge of the specific objectives of the campus Student Services program and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; gather and analyze data; ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations; present clear and concise information orally and in written reports; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations and other private and public agencies.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
  • Classification: Student Services Professional 1B / 3079 / 2
  • The anticipated HIRING RATE is $4269 per month. The salary range for this classification is: $4269 - $6040 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period. Based upon satisfactory progress, the incumbent will be promoted to SSP II after the conclusion of the six-month training program.
  • The position is currently hybrid (4 days in office, 1 day remote) during non-programmatic weeks; however, this is subject to change based on student and/or operational needs.
