Job Summary

Under the general direction of and reporting to the Director of The Learning Center, the incumbent coordinates the university's ELL tutoring program and coordinates special initiatives related to tutoring, including embedded tutoring and centralized training for campus peer educators.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Conversation Lab and ELL tutors, including training, scheduling, and supervising the work of tutors employed by or volunteering for the program. Also assesses program outcomes.
  • Coordinate and provide operational support for special tutoring initiatives, including embedded tutoring initiatives and peer educator training initiatives. Supports the Director in assessing initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty from colleges on campus to promote current service offerings and to identify current learning support needs. Assist, as needed, in implementing programs that respond to those needs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Strong cross-cultural knowledge and empathy, both academic and experiential, to facilitate development of both student ELL specialists and students using ELL tutoring. Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, both oral and written, to communicate with student ELL tutors, students using ELL tutoring, staff, and faculty across campus. Good diagnostic/student assessment skills of language abilities. Strong foundation in language acquisition and language development research. Proficiency using technology, including software and web-based applications to streamline processes, and continue to develop online interactive modalities for service delivery.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.  Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.  Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student, and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, or a job-related field and three years of professional experience in one of the student program areas or in a related field required. 

• A master's degree in Linguistics, ELL, English with ELL, English with TESL certificate, or an equivalent field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

• Experience with embedded tutoring or other embedded peer support.

Physical Summary

  • Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $4,836 - $6,891 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $4,836 - $4,982 per month.

Time Base

1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

Duration of Appointment

This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
