Position Summary
The NAGPRA Assistant will aid the NAGPRA team with actions necessary for the University's compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and CalNAGPRA. The position assists with cataloging and inventorying NAGPRA/CalNAGPRA-related collections and works collaboratively to conduct compliance and repatriation activities. Duties may include: creating and maintaining documents and inventories related to the archaeological and ethnographic collections, writing site summaries, reviewing repatriation documents, assisting with consultations, and communicating with tribal representatives and other involved parties.
FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm
Sacramento State is committed to fulfilling the University’s responsibilities under NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA. Repatriation activities at Sacramento State are led by a core NAGPRA staff under the Office of Tribal Affairs with oversight by the Office of the President and the NAGPRA Implementation Committee.
Entry to this classification requires fundamental written and oral communication skills, including a sound foundation in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation; an ability to understand standard office procedures; an ability to operate standard office equipment; an ability to learn office technology systems; an ability to perform basic mathematical calculations; and typing and keyboard skills.
These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through completion of a high school program or its equivalent and some experience in an office environment.
1. Working knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
2. Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software packages
3. Ability to identify and solve standard problems and refer more complex problems to appropriate staff.
4. Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
5. Fundamental writing and presentation skills to effectively communicate standard information.
6. Ability to respond to routine inquiries and explain standard policies and procedures to others.
7. Knowledge of Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and CalNAGPRA
legislation.
8. Knowledge of museum standards and procedures.
9. Knowledge of archaeological methodologies and material culture.
10. Ability to use standard office software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office), with the ability to maintain databases
using Microsoft Access.
11. Experience with following policies and procedures regarding sensitive data and maintaining confidentiality.
12. Demonstrated ability to multi-task and good organizational skills
13. Ability to work independently
14. Good interpersonal skills to work with a diverse population

16. Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies or related field.
17. At least two years of archaeological field and/or laboratory experience.
18. Experience with preparing NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA supporting documentation.
19. Experience with additional skill sets necessary for creating NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA inventories and
collections management, such as experience with Geographic Information Systems, Adobe Access databases,
human osteology, archaeological object identifications, determining land ownership, and other archival
research.
20. Knowledge of the California prehistoric and ethnographic record.
21. Experience working with Native American communities.
