PURPOSE:
Under the general direction of the Center's Director, the UROC Research Programs Associate (RPA) is responsible for planning, organizing and administering year-round UROC programs as well as work with CSUMB departments, student centers, campus partners, to support undergraduate research. The RA establishes new undergraduate research placements with CSUMB faculty and campus partners, oversees student research placements, develops and leads mentoring inclusivity workshops for faculty and mentors, and leads workshops and seminars for undergraduate researchers. The RA position requires extensive knowledge of undergraduate research, summer research programs, research-based graduate programs, as well as a strong understanding of how to prepare students for research, graduate school, and professional life.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Undergraduate Research Programming:
- Develops, implements, and administers year round UROC research programs designed to attract, support, and retain students from underrepresented populations
- Develops guidelines and procedures for all UROC programs including research/mentoring agreements, eligibility, responsible conduct of research training, and processes to ensure UROC students meet the program requirements.
- Supports students in finding undergraduate research placements (regional or international) during the academic year and summer research experiences.
- Supports the development of student research talks, posters, and publications. Support students in conference identification and presentation preparation.
- Develops and contributes to oversight of programming for gifts and grants.
- Serves as program coordinator for UROC’s Summer Program serving UROC participants, co-facilitating the Intro to Research professional development series.
- Serves as the CSU-STEM Pathways Alliances (CSU-SPA) campus co-coordinator providing participants academic and professional support.
Grants and funding administration:
- Oversees some grant administration, budgets, and operations.
- Manages UROC participant database and provides reports on UROC student programming (demographics, number of participants, research dissemination)
- Collaborates with CSUMB faculty to offer UROC program services to grant-funded student success programs (e.g., NIH GREAT, METAS, USDA, and others).
- Provides UROC mentor training and follow up assistance to faculty, graduate students, and research partners.
- Publishes UROC's undergraduate research and mentoring models in peer-reviewed journals and presents at professional conferences.
- Participates in writing public and private funding proposals, particularly those related directly to student research support, to sustain and grow UROC.
- Manages the UROC scholarship budget coordinating student awards with the Financial Aid office.
- Participates in assessing UROC's mentoring effectiveness.
Campus collaborations
- Develops and maintains UROC's undergraduate research partnerships with CSUMB faculty using best practices in mentoring, and with regional, statewide, and national research programs.
- Provides professional development workshops.
- Collaborates with other UROC staff in preparing and delivering content in UROC seminars/classroom presentations.
- Collaborates in the planning and development of campus-wide student research events (serving as the lead for the Spring Research Fair, co-coordinator for the Summer Research Symposium and Spring Showcase).
- Provides one- on-one mentoring for participating students and students interested in UROC to discuss research and post-graduate plans (jobs and graduate schools).
- Makes presentations to student groups and maintains relationships with other campus offices.
- Serves as liaison with community colleges, regional research institutions, and other institutions of higher education collaborating on summer research programs and provides professional development workshops.
- Participates in UROC outreach and fundraising events.
Other Functions:
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution, where such are job-related.
Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
- Ph.D. degree in a STEM field preferred, with five years of experience working in higher education.
- Extensive knowledge of higher education, graduate school preparation needs, and the research process.
- Deep understanding of the research environment.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with administration, faculty, students, and community partners.
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills utilizing tact, diplomacy, and patience.
- Demonstrated writing, critical assessment, and synthesis skills.
- Ability to present clear and concise information orally and in written reports, proposals, and publications.
- Teaching experience, particularly teaching university-level undergraduate students.
- Ability to think creatively and conceptually, and to apply independent judgment, discretion, and initiative to address problems and develop practical, thorough, and creative solutions.
- Ability to manage complex projects, work independently as well as collaboratively, and complete tasks on time.
- Ability to work within a project management framework of deadlines and deliverables.
- Advanced computer literacy, including word-processing, statistical software, databases, website development, and graphics.
- Knowledge and familiarity with Federal grant proposals, grant awards, and required documentation and reporting.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration, multiculturalism and diversity, community service, and institutional excellence.
- Experience working with diverse and multicultural populations and the ability to guide students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds to higher levels of scholarly development.

- Develop and maintain an atmosphere of teamwork.
- Technical fluency in Canvas, Canva, Oasis, Campus Data Warehouse, Zoom, InfoReady, Microsoft Office Professional, Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
